welcome to our Italian language school, Laboratorio Linguistico, established in 1994 and recognised by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research. Our Italian Language and Culture courses are held all the year through in Milazzo, in Sicily, the largest Mediterranean island. The City of Milazzo – with its breathtaking location in front of the Aeolian Islands – kept its genuine Italian nature intact not being affected by mass tourism flows. The School Laboratorio Linguistico – in cooperation with the Università per Stranieri di Siena – is also a Training Centre for Italian language teachers (L2/LS); our school is also an examination centre where you can obtain the DITALS certificate (Certificate of ability to teach Italian to foreigners). Our Italian courses are based on the parameters set forth by the European Council directives, as well as by the Common European Reference Framework for Languages. Milazzo − Aeolian Island − Sailboat − Farm tourism In spring, between May and June, Laboratorio Linguistico organises Italian courses at Lipari and Salina (Aeolian Islands). For those who wish to learn Italian and enjoy the sea at the same time, it is possible to attend courses organised by the school on a sailboat. These courses are held in May and in September. You shall learn Italian while sailing among the islands of Alicudi, Stromboli, Filicudi, Salina, Lipari, Vulcano and Panarea in contact with the natural environment exactly how ancient Greek philosophers used to teach their students: among the beauties of nature. In autumn, in October, we organise courses at Casa Migliaca, a holiday farm located on the slopes of Nebrodi, the mountain chain in the northern part of Sicily. Casa Migliaca was an ancient oil mill dating back to the 19th century, thoroughly restored. There you will meet Teresa Maria and Sebastiano, the owners, who will receive you with the warm hospitality typical of the people of southern Italy and you will also have the chance of tasting the savoury Sicilian and Italian dishes. In this place Italian lessons are held in a beautiful context, in a natural environment surrounded by ancient olive trees. After language lessons you will continue learning Italian by living in contact with the two Sicilian hosts. Why learning Italian in Sicily People come to Milazzo in Sicily because of our ancient cultural tradition and of the marks and remains left in Sicily by the various people of the Mediterranean who lived on our island. Moreover, from a historical viewpoint, in Sicily the Scuola Siciliana made the first attempts to set up rules for vulgar Latin, the language spoken by ordinary people. It happened at the beginning of the 13th Century at the Court of Fredrick II of Schwabia, a member of the Hohenstaufen family defined as “stupor mundi” thanks to his cultural and spiritual greatness. His court was the gathering point for man of letters and scholars coming from the Mediterranean area, there the first attempts of setting up the Italian language were made and these experiences were later developed by the Scuola Toscana. Jacopo da Lentini was the first to create the poetical form of the sonnet, which was to have great success all over Europe. Italian courses We have been working for more than 10 years in the field of languages, therefore our experience in teaching Italian is available for those who wish to learn Italian. You shall learn Italian in the most professional and pleasant way, according to the latest teaching methods. Students can attend our courses in Milazzo all the year through. The first day of lesson, students will make an entry test and will later be sorted into the various classes at different levels. Lessons are held by teachers specialised in teaching Italian to foreigners. Thanks to their professional experience and human value students will surely be embedded in Italian culture. Courses are organised into 6 different levels; classes will be held by focussing on the communicative level, this means students learn Italian by using it and focussing on the different aspects of communication: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The experience gathered over time enables our teachers to teach Italian in a less academic, but in a joyful and very efficient way. At Laboratorio Linguistico you will learn Italian having great fun. Moreover students can make the CILS (Certificazione di italiano come lingua straniera) issued by the Università per stranieri di Siena, and CELI examination (Certificato di conoscenza della lingua italiana) issued by the Università per stranieri di Perugia. Students can also attend courses of Italian literature, history of art as well as cooking courses. Free time activities Once lessons are over, students and teachers may take part in the programme of activities organised for our students. Learning a language is part of a culture and we want our students to approach Italian lifestyle and culture. Students can therefore join the programme of trips and excursions organised by the school. Trips are organised to Messina, Tindari, Capo Calavà, Taormina, Cefalù and Novara di Sicilia, as well as to Palermo and Syracuse or to the Etna, the largest and still active volcano of Europe. These are wonderful occasions for visiting this part of Sicily as well as for getting to know better the other students and teachers, the friends of Italian language coming from European and overseas countries. Accommodations We have set up a number of different accommodation types for the students attending our Italian courses. We are focussed on our students' wellbeing and comfort and we pay attention to the faintest detail. Our school selects all the flats, apartments, houses and families with the utmost attention because we are convinced that comfortable accommodation contributes to the success of your study holiday. Flats and apartments are located near the city centre, 5 minutes walk far from the school and 10 minutes walk far from the beaches and from pubs/clubs scattered all over the city and along the beach promenade. Garden houses are mainly located in the upper part of the city in a very quiet area, 20 minutes walk far from the school and the beach. We are waiting for you!
