Why
Learning Italian in Italy is an essential prerequisite for a high level of language achievement in a comparatively short time. This is because in Italy the student will be completely immersed in the climate and the culture of the country, while having at the same time Italian lessons from a native speaker. The program Italian in famiglia represents a further step forward because it provides the student with an "authentic communicative situation": as a matter of fact he or she "lives with the teacher" and can share with him and his family a number of daily activities such as going for a walk, shopping, meeting people, going to the cinema, watching television etc. As a result, the student will be given many different opportunities for learning by "listening, observing and actively participating". In fact it is well known how much easier it is learning a language when different stimuli are given and how more effectively a certain linguistic task is memorized if it is perceived in its "natural environment" and not only in class activities such as role-plays. The site where the apartment is located (an almost unknown village in Sicily) is a further advantage becouse only in less famous or unknown areas in Italy is it still possible to find a distinctive Italian character, with a language and a way of life far apart from a growing tendency to the imitation of "imported" features. Moreover it must be remembered that most historical Italian cities are being overwhelmed by too many tourists with a resulting loss in their appearances and traditions. Finally in Sicily it is still possible to find a really warm hospitality and at the same time an Italian language and culture with a very old tradition.

Where

The apartment is located in a citrus grove off Torrenova, a small sea village in the north of Sicily, almost half way between Messina and Palermo. The sea is only 20 minutes walk down a country road and the beach is particularly clean. There is a big supermarket in Rocca di Caprileone (5 minutes walk). From Torrenova students can go on guided excursions to some evocative tourist sites in Sicily.

Accomodation

The student will have an apartment on his/her own. It is upstairs from that of the teacher. This is an ideal accomodation for the student since he or she can have his/her own privacy while sharing the teacher’s family life.

The apartment (a double and a single room) is perfectly fitted for a couple with one or two children. 
The kitchen is nicely equipped , there is a bathroom, a large living room where lessons are normally held, and even a terrace where students can have dinner, read and relax. There is a television with a videorecorder, a radio, a washing machine, a computer for e mails, a bicycle and a canoe.

Finally the student can have dinner with the teacher and his family and so he or she can taste typical Sicilian meals.

 Accomodation can also be given to people who don't wish to take lessons.
Lessons
The lessons are intensive and normally individual (group lessons only on request). They will be held from Mon to Fri and will last 4 hours a day. The teaching material, selected by the teacher, ranges from text books, audio and video tapes, newspaper and magazine articles, etc. It is included in the cost of the lessons and is adapted to the need of any student. Spoken language and fluent communication with native speakers are the main objectives of the course.
In his/her free time the student can follow with the same teacher different lessons too, such as Spanish, classical guitar or painting.
